Athens edges Tioga; Mennig no hits Newfield.

2013 Athens vs. Tioga SoftballTIOGA CENTER, N.Y. - Athens held off a Tioga rally to pick up a 5-4 win in softball action Thursday.

The Wildcats led 2-0 after three innings but the Tigers knotted it up with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Athens took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth and extended it to 5-2 in the seventh. Tioga was able to get two runs in the bottom half of the seventh but couldn't quite get over the hump.

Jensen Dunkling went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Wildcats while Mackenzie Hafer and Christin Dunkling both went 2-for-4. Hafer added two runs while Christin had an RBI.

Kassandra Winters, Miranda Peterson and Morgan Westbrook also had hits for Athens.

Haley Priester scored twice for the Wildcats while Rica Dimon added an RBI.

Christin Dunkling was the winning pitcher, going all seven innings to strike out eight while allowing four walks, four hits and no earned runs.

At the plate Alexis Vandruff led the way, going 2-for-3 while Danielle Barto and Deanna Hutchison had the other two hits.

Brtt Vergason, Sam Wood, Donnette Hutchison and Deanna Hutchison scored the their runs while Barto had an RBI. Wood takes the loss, going seven innings to strike out four while allowing no walks, 10 hits and one earned run.

Tioga is back in action today as they host Newfield at 4:30 p.m.

Waverly 15, Newfield 0

WAVERLY, N.Y. - Sam Mennig threw a no-hitter, striking out 11 as the Wolverines picked up the victory on Thursday.

Mennig walked two in the game and she was also 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored in the victory.

"She did a fantastic job, to come off on the first game and pitch a no-hitter," Waverly coach Jackie Robinson said. "The first two innings three up three down and she struck out all six. She was throwing an excellent game, you can really tell she worked in the offseason."

Morgan Salsman had a hit in the game and Megan Wilbur had a hit and scored a run.

Shailei Kraft scored two runs and Becca Morgan scored a run, while Stephanie Bellis scored two runs.

Sabrina Bowman had a hit and scored two runs and Carmella Ruth scored a run.

McKenzie Murdough had a hit and scored a run, Kiana Manuel had a triple and scored two runs and Reylyn Schwartzhoff had three hits, with a double.

Central Mountain 4, Troy 0

Sara Hunsicker and Taylor Murray each had hits in the loss for Troy on Thursday.

Kara Schucker went five innings on the mound, striking out three, walking none and allowing nine hits and four earned runs.

Bethany Manley pitched one shutout inning, allowing one hit for Troy.

The Trojans are at Towanda on Monday.

Edison 6, Notre Dame 3

In a matchup of the IAC large-school and small-school champions from a year ago, the Crusaders jumped out to a 3-0 lead, before Edison got five in the fifth with two outs to come away with the victory.

Notre Dame got the lead as Alivia Clark had an RBI single and Brooke Harvey hit a two-run home run.

However, Edison battled against Ridgebury's Olivia May, pounding out 11 hits on the day. May struck out nine in the loss.

Taylor Engelbert and Mckenzie Slavin limited Notre Dame to seven hits in the game.

Notre Dame is at Newark Valley on Monday.
