Waverly softball rallies; Athens, ND notch wins.

2012 Athens vs. Blue Ridge SoftballWAVERLY - Down 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the young Wolverines rallied with a four-run inning to come away with the victory on Friday.

In the sixth inning Megan Wilbur tripled and a fielders' choice left Cassie Morey on first. A two-out single by Cassidy Farr put two runners on and Sam Mennig tripled to bring them both home.

A triple by Sabrina Bowman tied the game at 3-3 and a hit by Stephanie Bellis put the Wolverines on top 4-3.

In the bottom of the seventh Newak Valley threatened as Jess Darpino walked and stole second and moved to third on a single by Kirsten Chase, but the Wolverines got out of the inning, helped by a big catch by Kiana Manuel at shortstop.

Morey scored the one run for Waverly and Farr had two hits and one run scored. Mennig had the triple and the run scored and Bowman had the triple and a run scored, while Wilbur had a triple.

Mennig pitched for Waverly, striking out none and walking three and allowing seven hits, while hitting one batter and allowing one unearned run.

Darpino pitched for Newark Valley, striking out three and walking one, while allowing five hits.

Athens 3, Blue Ridge 1

ATHENS - The Wildcats got a triple from Mackenzie Hafer and a home run from Christin Dunkling as they picked up the victory on Friday.

Athens led 1-0 after the first inning as Jenn Wells reached on a bunt and she scored after Dunkling singled and Miranda Peterson reached on an error.

In the third inning Athens extended the lead as Hafer led off with a triple and she scored on an Alexa Daddona single. Dunkling then hit a solo home run in the inning to cap the scoring.

Dunkling worked six innings on the mound, striking out nine and allowing seven walks and one hit by pitch. She allowed no hits in the six innings. Daddona pitched an innings, striking out two and allowing one hit.

Hafer had the one hit and Daddona had a hit, while Dunkling had two hits, with the home run and Abbie Beck had a hit in the game.

Notre Dame 12, Watkins Glen 2

SOUTHPORT, N.Y. - The Crusaders opened their season with a win as Athens' Olivia May struck out 13 in the victory.

May allowed six hits and two walks in the game. At the plate May had a two-hit day, including a double, and she scored a pair of runs and had an RBI.

Becca Saggiomo, also of Athens, had one hit and scored a run, while getting an RBI in the game.

Sydney Dimon had two hits, including a two-run home run, and she scored two runs, while Alivia Clark had two hits, with a double, and an RBI and two runs scored.

Emily Lepkowski had two hits, three RBI and a run scored and Detta Gublo had a double and a run scored and an RBI. Sam Erbach had a pair of runs scored and Abby Carr had one hit, while Mackenzie Maloney scored a run and Emily Donahue had a hit.

Taylor Chaffee had a two hit day, with two run scored and a double to lead Watkins Glen.

CV 19, Sayre 11

An eight-run Cowanesque fifth inning lifted the Indians to the victory on Friday night.

Sayre trailed 5-0 and 10-8 but battled back each time, however eight errors haunted the Redskins.

Trailing 5-0, Sayre struck for five runs in the top of the third inning in a rally that featured a two-run double by Kristyn Tappan, a two-run single by Des Waltman and an RBI single by Kelsey Young.

The Lady Redskins took an 8-5 lead with a three-run rally in the top of the fourth, highlighted by RBI singles by Brooke Wampole and Kristyn Tappan, but the Lady Indians responded with five runs in the home half of the fourth inning to take a 10-8 lead.

Wampole's two-run single in the top of the fifth inning tied the game at 10-10, but CV erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the frame to take control of the game.

Kristyn Tappan led the Sayre offense with three hits, while Kaitlyn Tappan had two hits and two runs scored and Wampole and Rachel Hurley had two hits apiece.

Kelly Villanti had a hit and two runs scored and Waltman, Young and Maria Servedio each had one hit for the Lady Redskins.

Kristyn Tappan pitched four innings for Sayre, striking out seven and walking five. Shelby Coolbaugh relieved her to start the fifth and was tagged with the loss.

Sayre is back in action Wednesday at Northeast Bradford.
