2014 Troy vs. Towanda SoftballWYSOX - For the Troy Trojans it had gone from two on and no outs in the eighth inning, to two on and two outs when Brooke Mattocks stepped to the plate.

After back-to-back ground balls led to force plays at third base, it was up to Mattocks to capitalize on the scoring chance against unbeaten Towanda.

Capitalize is exactly what Mattocks did, smacking a two-run double to center and then scoring on a Kerrigan Hoffman single to give Troy a 6-3 win over Towanda.

"I was focused and I just did what I do to get ready," Mattocks said of her at-bat. "I went up and I was ready for it."

Mattocks wasn't sure if her hit was going to drop in and she didn't know for sure until she hit second base.

"Honestly I just ran the bases as usual," she said. "I got there (to second) and saw my teammates celebrating and so I started celebrating."

The Trojans know this was a big league win.

"It was a big game," Mattocks said. "It's a tough NTL. It's always a great feeling to win here (at Towanda)."

The game was scoreless through four before Towanda broke through with a three-run fifth inning. The inning started with a Sarah Dawsey double and after a Sam Peachey walk and a hit by Bella Bartholomew the Black Knights got a two-run single from Koryn Wickwire and an RBI single from Mackenzie Roof.

Troy fought right back in the sixth, getting two out hits from Faith Ceely, Kayla Stephani and Taylor Johnston, who all scored to tie the game.

"We are a team that does our best to just grind it out," Mattocks said. "We were all down, but we picked ourselves up and played ball."

"We did it as a team," Hoffman added.

Hoffman, a first-year starting pitcher, struck out five and limited Towanda to seven hits in the game.

"It was so exciting, I was nervous though," Hoffman said of the game. "I was real nervous at first, it was a big game."

One thing that helped the Trojans starter was the play of her defense.

"My defense was great, they backed me up," she said.

In the seventh Kelsey Bristol and Ceely led off with hits, before Towanda got Stephani and Johnston to hit into fielder's choices, leaving them on first and second and Bristol and Ceely out at third.

Mattocks then came through with the game-winning double, before Hoffman drove her home with a hit.

Ceely had three hits and scored a run for Troy and Bristol had a hit. Stephani had a hit and scored two runs and Johnston had a hit, two RBI and two runs scored.

Mattocks had the double, a run scored and two RBI and Hoffman had two hits and an RBI, while Brooke Losey-Root added a hit.

Alaina Wickwire struck out eight on the mound for Towanda and she had a hit at the plate.

Koryn Wickwire had a hit and two RBI, Roof had a hit and an RBI and Laciann Manning had a hit. Bartholomew had two hits and scored a run, Dawsey had a hit and scored a run and Peachey scored a run.

The Trojans know that getting this win and staying unbeaten in the league is important.

"It's a huge confidence boost for us," Hoffman said.

"This gives us confidence, but we can't take any team lightly," Mattocks said. "We have another tough game against Canton tomorrow and we have to be ready for it."
