Athens edges Canton.

2014 Athens vs. Canton SoftballCANTON - Athens' Mackenzie Hafer was a home run short of the cycle as the Wildcats held on to beat Canton 7-6 in NTL softball action Wednesday.

Hafer went 3-for-4 with a double and triple while adding a run scored and 2-RBI to lead the Wildcats. Miranda Peterson also had a strong game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and run scored.

Canton took an early 1-0 lead but Athens came back with three runs in the bottom of the second to go up 3-1.

The Warriors chipped away at the deficit with a run in the third, then the flood gates opened up in the fourth as Canton scored four runs to take a 6-3 lead.

The Wildcats rallied back in the next inning as they scored three runs of their own to knot the game up at 6-all.

Then in the top of the sixth Athens took the lead and held on from there.

Also for Athens Reagan Lynch, Aubrey Allen, Jensen Dunkling and Kaitlyn Testen had hits. Lynch scored twice while Hafer, Allen, Dunkling and Haley Priester also crossed home.

Testen added an RBI.

Miranda Peterson worked 3 1/3 innings for Athens, striking out three and Aubrey Allen struck out one in 3 2/3 innings.

For Canton Maggy Machmer went 2-for-3 with a double, 2-RBI and a run scored while Emily Jennings (2-for-3) and Courtney McFall (2-for-2) also had multiple hits in the game. Jennings and McFall each scored once.

Lauren Watkins had a hit with two runs, Makenzy Route had a double with an RBI while Kayla Ward also had a hit.

Kellsy Ross scored a run.

In the circle Ross started and earned the loss for Canton going to the distance to strike out five while allowing nine hits and one walk.

Waverly 15, Newark Valley 0

Sam Mennig threw a no hitter, striking out seven, and she was one of four Waverly hitters to hit a home run in the win.

Mennig, Kiana Manuel, Stephanie Bellis and Shailei Kraft all had home runs in the game.

Kraft had two hits, with a double and a home run, a run scored and two RBI. Bellis had two hits, three RBI and two runs, with the home run. Mennig had three hits, a double and a home run, two runs and two RBI. Manuel had three hits, three RBI and two runs.

Zoe Mennig had two hits, two runs and an RBI and Megan Wilbur had two hits, with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

Rebecca Morgan had a hit and scored two runs and Morgan Salsman had a hit and a run scored, while Reylyn Schwartzhoff had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.

NEB 16, Liberty 1, 4 innings

Annie Williams hit her first career home run to lead NEB to the win.

Williams had two hits, with the home run, five RBI and two runs scored.

Chelsie Souto started on the mound, striking out one, walking six and allowing two hits and two runs, one earned, in 2 1/3 innings. Williams allowed no hits or walks in 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief.

Maddy Johnson had two hits, a stolen base and scored three runs for NEB and Danielle Moore scored a run.

Calla Johnson had a hit, an RBI and scored three runs and Angelia Laudermilch had two hits, a run scored and three RBI.

Julia Williams had a hit, Bridget Haverly had a hit and scored a run and Souto scored a run. Monica Brown had a hit, two runs and two RBI and Megan Brown had two hits, a double and two RBI.

Maria Berguson struck out three for Liberty and she had an RBI. Lauren Smith had a hit and scored a run and Becky Rossell had a hit.

NEB is at Wyalusing today.

Wellsboro 5, CV 1

Brooke Kohler had three hits at the plate and defensively she turned three double plays, two unassisted, in the win.

Alexa Singer struck out four to get the win.

Paige Carr had two hits, with a double and two RBI and Baylea Lehman had two hits, with a triple and a run scored. Sarah Ingerick had two hits with a run scored.

Darci Warriner, Singer and Maggie Smith all scored runs in the game.

Julie Brubaker had two hits, with a double, for CV. Lexi Heyler and Tori Burdick each had hits, with Burdick driving in a run.

Shanelle Ianson struck out six in the game for CV.

Wellsboro is at Troy on Friday.

Towanda 8, Williamson 0

Alaina Wickwire threw a one hitter for Towanda on Wednesday, striking out 13 and walking none.

At the plate Koryn Wickwire was 4-for-5 with two doubles and a triple and Alaina Wickwire had a triple.

Sam Herrington had the hit for Williamson and Sarah Bates and Jessica Burrous combined to strike out seven for Williamson.

Tioga 16, Newfield 1

The Tigers opened their season on Wednesday with 10 runs in the first three innings of the win.

"We've only been outside a handful of times," Tioga coach Jim Wood said. "If there was a silver lining to that, we really had to maintain focus inside the gym and we came out real sharp definitely tonight. The girls did great things defensively for us, I was really pleased with the start. Offensively we really did some great things tonight. It's a great start for us."

Sam Wood had a perfect game through four on the mound and she allowed two hits and no walks, striking out nine.

At the plate Dani Barto was 4-for-4 with a double, a home run, four runs scored, six RBI and a stolen base.

Brittany Vergason had two hits, a double, a triple, an RBI and three runs scored and Wood had two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored.

Taylor Ayres had two hits and scored two runs and Katelyn Stubbs had a hit and an RBI.

Sarah Hollenbeck had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored and Rachael Graham scored a run, while Lexi Swagler had a hit and Victoria Swansbrough had a hit and scored a run.

Rachael Hollander started for Newfield and Lauren Shoemacher and Haley Meyers had hits.

Tioga hosts Candor today.

Wyalusing 11, Sayre 0, 5 innings

The Rams got two hits, with a home run, and four RBI from Kasey DeVoir in the win on Wednesday.

Emily Faulkner threw a one hitter on the mound, striking out seven for the Rams.

Paighton Martin scored three runs and Ally DeVoir scored two runs. Erin Canfield, Faulkner, Kate Epler and Kyleigh Ward all had hits in the game. Epler scored three runs and Faulkner and Ward each scored runs.

Dominique Woodruff had a hit for Canton and Kristyn Tappan pitched for the Redskins, striking out one.

Edison 15, Notre Dame 0, 5 innings

SOUTHPORT, N.Y. - Edison exploded for 11 runs in the fifth to pick up the win on Wednesday.

Mackenzie Maloney, Brooke Smith and Ali Raupers had hits for Notre Dame in the game.

Alivia Clark started on the mound, striking out six and Izzy Milazzo finished up the pitching.

Mackenzie Slaven had the shutout for Edison, striking out four.

Slaven, Michelle Wyochak and Danielle Collear had three hits each for Edison, Collear getting a double.
