After the top of the first inning, it looked like Cowanesque Valley may pull off the upset.

They ended their first at bat leading 1-0 while Southern Columbia pitcher Mallory Tomaschik struggled in the circle as she was called for two illegal pitches.

That was short lived, though, as Southern scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning to come out on top 8-1 in District IV, Class A softball action Thursday.

Shanelle Ianson scored the loss, striking out eight while allowing four hits, seven earned runs and eight walks.

Courtney Shauer went 1-for-4 with a run scored for the Indians while Beth Brubaker had the other CV hits.

Tomaschik struck out 13 in the win while Kayla Lavella went 2-for-3 with 2-RBI and two runs scored to lead Southern Columbia.

Southern will face Muncy Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Elm Park.
