Lady Hornets fall to North Penn-Liberty, 12-8.

Lady Hornets fall to North Penn-Liberty, 12-8.
 

The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team suffered a 12-8 loss to rival North Penn-Liberty, their 1st loss of the season, on Thursday, April 8.

Things started out well for the Lady Hornets as they scored 4 early runs in the top of the first to take the lead. After back-to-back triples by sophomore Jordyn Abernathy and senior Kerrah Clymer and singles by senior Jena Boyce and junior Emma Coolidge also scored for the early lead. Liberty however took the lead with a 7-run bottom of the 2nd to take the lead. Both teams scored single runs in the 3rd inning but the Lady Hornets still trailed, 8-5.

The Lady Mounties increased their lead with a run in the bottom of the 4th to make it 9-5 and held out a 3-run rally attempt by Wellsboro in the 5th and 6th innings to pick up their 1st win of the season and hand Wellsboro their 1st loss.

Sophomore Madaline Bordas and Abernathy led the Lady Hornets at the plate. Bordas was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI and Abernathy was 3-for-5 with 2 triples, an RBI, and scored 2 runs. Clymer, Cooldige, and senior Chelsie English all had 2 hits on the afternoon and Boyce and senior Jessa Lohr also had hits.

Clymer started for Wellsboro and pitched two innings allowing 7 runs (6 earned), 5 walks and 2 strikeouts. Sophomore Rylie Boyce came on for the final 4 innings, scattering 3 hits, and giving up 5 runs (3 earned), with 3 walks and a strikeout.

The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 2-1 (2-1 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action on Monday, April 12 as they host Athens.
